The Labour Party has faulted the process of collating the result of the February 25th presidential and National Assembly elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and has vowed to challenge the election results in court.
In the statement which was released by the party’s National Secretary, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, he said that many Labour Party members were deliberately disenfranchised through several methods across the country, especially in Labour Party’s strongholds.
In the report which was made by Vanguard, Ibrahim said that many of the party’s members were chased away from their polling units or had their ballot papers and boxes destroyed.
In addition, he said that INEC staff and election materials were not sent on time to areas that are known to be Labour Party strongholds, or they were sent late, and by the time they arrived, the supporters were already tired and had to leave the polling units because of fear.
He said – “The delay by INEC to upload and announce results, especially where Labour Party is already known to have taken lead, is also worrisome and we feel it is deliberate to anger our party and our supporters.”
He gave the assurance that the party will challenge the outcome of the final result in court.
The report has been generating mixed reactions from members of the public, with a lot of people asking if it isn’t too early for the party to start talking about challenging the election results in court. Some advised that it is better for people to wait for INEC to announce the results first.
