Barrister Temi Nuruddin Salami, representing the Initiative for Positive Growth and Collective Development (IPAD), has urged the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to address serious internal corruption allegations.
This call follows rising tensions between the agency and Kwara South Senator, Oyelola Yisa Ashiru.
During a discussion on a Bill proposing the creation of a National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation, Senator Ashiru labeled the NDLEA as “the most corrupt and compromised” organization.
In response, the NDLEA dismissed the senator’s remarks, claiming they were driven by personal grievances rather than genuine national concerns.
Salami criticized the NDLEA’s reaction, calling it “disappointing” and “a blatant disrespect to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
While he acknowledged the progress made under Brig. Gen. Muhammad Buba Marwa (Rtd) in combating drug abuse, Salami highlighted that corruption within the agency is well-known. He pointed to frequent reports of NDLEA officers allegedly accepting bribes and selling confiscated drugs, urging the agency to “self-reflect” instead of deflecting criticism.
He condemned the agency’s dismissive tone, asserting that even individuals with differing views have the right to critique the NDLEA’s actions.
Salami also advocated for reform, supporting the creation of the proposed National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation. He called on the NDLEA to welcome constructive criticism and stay focused on its core mission: “They should be looking inward and addressing the real issues.”
