The Enugu State Government has labeled the unauthorized sit-at-home order issued by unidentified non-state actors for Tuesday, October 29, 2024, as “mischievous.” This order allegedly stems from the tragic death of renowned Ogene musician Okezie Mba, also known as Igbo Jah.
The government condemned those behind this directive, describing them as “criminals and opportunists” who aim to exploit the situation for their own gain, ultimately harming the interests of Ndi Enugu and Ndi Igbo.
In an official statement, the government reassured the public that it is collaborating closely with security agencies to ensure accountability for Igbo Jah’s death. They characterized the sponsors and promoters of the sit-at-home order as “enemies of Enugu State and the Igbo nation.”
Residents were urged to disregard the illegal order and continue with their daily activities, with the government affirming its dedication to protecting lives and property.
Authorities confirmed that individuals connected to Igbo Jah’s death are already in custody and are being interrogated and prosecuted.
In a statement from the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof Chidiebere Onyia, it was noted, “We are aware of social media reports claiming that some faceless criminal actors have declared a sit-at-home in Enugu State on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, supposedly to protest the tragic killing of the popular Ogene musician, Okezie Mba, aka Igbo Jah, by a police officer on Friday.
“The Enugu State government strongly condemns this killing as abominable, unacceptable, and contrary to our core values, particularly the sanctity of human life. Governor Peter Mbah has promptly ordered a thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the killing and ensure that those responsible face justice. The perpetrator has been identified and is currently in custody as investigations continue.
On Sunday morning, a government delegation, led by the SSG and the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Barr Victor Udeh, visited the grieving family to express condolences and reaffirm the government’s commitment to justice.
“The Enugu State government is not surprised that criminal elements seek to exploit this tragic situation to incite chaos in the state, disrupt economic activities, and further burden our people.
“Those who manipulate the emotions of our community in the name of freedom agitation do not represent our values of enterprise, hard work, and creativity. They are merely criminals and adversaries of Ndi Igbo, aiming to destabilize the region.
Accordingly, there will be no compliance with the illegal sit-at-home order in any part of Enugu State on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. The government will use all available resources to ensure the safety of our citizens.
The government urges civil servants, farmers, market vendors, businesses, schools, teachers, and all workers in Enugu State to reject this sit-at-home order, which belongs to a shameful past we must collectively forget.”
