Nigerian youth have been strongly urged to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them and actively work towards fostering positive change within the country, rather than continuing to criticize or condemn the nation’s current state.
This call was made by the Chief Imam of the University of Ibadan, Professor Muftau Abdulrahman Oloyede, during his special Jumat Service, which was part of the activities leading up to the university’s 2024 convocation ceremonies and the 76th Foundation Day Anniversary of the institution.
Professor Oloyede stressed the importance of having a proactive mindset and encouraged the youth to look inward and focus on how they can contribute to the nation’s development. He advised that, instead of focusing on the negatives or indulging in complaints, citizens should channel their energy into prayers for the country and its leaders. He emphasized that, by doing so, they could play an active role in the betterment of the nation, offering support and guidance to leaders rather than criticizing or cursing them.
The Chief Imam also spoke about the damaging effects of vices and urged the youth to avoid engaging in unethical practices that could hinder the nation’s progress. In addition, he strongly discouraged contributing to the brain drain phenomenon, where educated Nigerians leave the country in search of better opportunities abroad. He called for a mindset shift, urging young Nigerians to not only seek personal success but also to think about how they could contribute to the growth of the nation, ensuring that the benefits of their education would be used to uplift society.
In his remarks, Professor Oloyede also encouraged young Nigerians to embrace a spirit of giving back to the community after receiving education. He urged that they should feel a deep sense of responsibility towards the country, using the knowledge and skills they acquire to solve problems and create opportunities within Nigeria. He further highlighted that there are many untapped resources and opportunities within the country that the youth could leverage to drive the nation forward.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor Peter Olapegba, also shared his thoughts during the occasion, expressing heartfelt gratitude to God for the gift of life, for allowing the university to celebrate another year, and for sustaining the institution for over 76 years. Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Kayode Adebowale, Professor Olapegba acknowledged the contributions of the Chief Imam and the University of Ibadan Muslim Community, thanking them for their unwavering prayers, support, and guidance for the present administration at the university.
The event served as a reminder of the important role that prayer, unity, and active participation play in shaping the future of the country. Both leaders underscored the need for the youth to stay committed to building a prosperous nation and to be mindful of their impact on society, ultimately encouraging them to take responsibility for Nigeria’s future.
