The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has formally revoked the membership of Musiliu Akinsanya, better known as MC Oluomo, according to Olalekan Folorunsho, the Southwest Zonal Chairman of the union, also referred to as Lekan Salami.
In a statement made on Tuesday, November 18, Salami disclosed that MC Oluomo had lost his membership in 2022 after an incident in which he tore his union identity card in protest against a disciplinary query issued by the national leadership. Salami clarified that the NURTW’s constitution is explicit on such matters, stating that any member seeking to return to the union must submit a formal application to the national leadership, which would then be subject to approval. Additionally, the individual must spend at least two years working at the grassroots level before being allowed to contest for any leadership position within the union.
Salami pointed out that MC Oluomo had not met these requirements, making him ineligible for any office or role within the NURTW. This decision underscores the union’s commitment to upholding its internal regulations and leadership structure.
Furthermore, Salami took the opportunity to reaffirm the authority of Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa, whose presidency was recently upheld by a ruling from the Court of Appeal. He urged the government and other relevant bodies to recognize Baruwa’s leadership, stressing that it was legally validated and should not be questioned. Salami condemned any acts of disorder within the union, particularly citing the situation in Osun State, where Baruwa’s leadership continues to hold firm.
“The NURTW in Osun State is still under the leadership of Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa. We will not tolerate gangsterism in our union, and it is crucial that MC Oluomo be held accountable for his actions,” Salami emphasized.
This latest development adds to the ongoing power struggle within the NURTW, as factions continue to challenge Baruwa’s presidency. However, with the recent court ruling supporting Baruwa’s position, there is now a clearer path toward resolving the disputes and restoring stability to the union at a national level. The outcome of this internal conflict could have far-reaching implications for the future direction of the NURTW and its role in the transport sector.
