Bode George, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to reconsider his ambitions for the 2027 presidential election. Speaking at a press conference marking his 79th birthday on Thursday, George advised Atiku to step aside and allow younger, more capable candidates to take the lead.
In his remarks, George emphasized that Atiku, who would be 81 years old in 2027, has been vying for the presidency since 1993. He urged Atiku to step back and embrace the role of a statesman, calling on him to “calm down” and act in the best interests of the party and the nation. “I appeal to you in the name of the almighty Allah that you serve, take it easy and leave everything for prosperity,” George said.
Additionally, George expressed concern over the current state of the PDP, citing internal divisions and selfish interests as major obstacles to the party’s success. He called for urgent action to address these issues ahead of the party’s upcoming National Convention, stressing the need for unity and a renewed sense of purpose.
The PDP stalwart highlighted that while the party leadership was making efforts to ensure inclusivity, certain “desperados” were actively undermining these efforts. George lamented that the party, once a formidable political force, had become “a shadow of itself” due to the selfish ambitions of some of its members.
In a passionate appeal, George also noted that the PDP’s founding fathers, who are no longer alive, would be deeply saddened to see how the party has devolved into factionalism and internal strife. He expressed disappointment that some PDP members were reportedly working in favor of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as the 2027 elections draw closer.
In conclusion, George called for a united PDP, warning that the party’s future success depends on its ability to set aside personal interests for the greater good of the nation.
