A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bode George, has criticized Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, for his comments about former President Olusegun Obasanjo. George warned that Onanuga would face consequences for insulting Obasanjo, whom he described as a respected elder in Yoruba culture.
The controversy began when Obasanjo criticized the state of governance under Tinubu’s administration, describing Nigeria as a “failing state” plagued by corruption and leadership shortcomings. In response, Onanuga issued a statement dismissing Obasanjo as unfit to critique leadership in Nigeria, accusing him of offering unsolicited advice and blaming others for challenges that persisted after his tenure.
Speaking during an interview on Nigeria Info FM, Bode George condemned Onanuga’s response, emphasizing the importance of respecting elders in Yoruba culture. He accused Onanuga of behaving disrespectfully and warned that such actions could have repercussions.
George said, “An old man, who could be Bayo Onanuga’s father, expressed his opinion, and you chose to insult him left, right, and center. That is his style because he did it to me before. He didn’t meet me in Ijebu Ode Grammar School. You can see how small he is when he compares himself to us. People give their opinion, and instead of responding with respect, he insults them.”
Highlighting the cultural implications, George added, “Even if you want to react, Yoruba culture does not permit such disrespect. Someday, he will pay for this. In Yoruba land, it’s not impossible for him to face spiritual consequences. There is always a day after, and that day is more important. He should be cautious as he moves because being charmed is not out of the question.”
The remarks by George reflect a broader concern about the tone of public discourse in Nigeria, particularly when it involves criticism of senior statesmen. His comments also underscore the role of cultural norms and respect in addressing disagreements in the public sphere.
