The Imo State Police Command has debunked claims surrounding the alleged abduction of Fabian Ihekweme, a former commissioner for foreign affairs in the state. Contrary to reports circulating online, the police clarified that Ihekweme was lawfully arrested, not abducted, at his residence in Abuja on Wednesday.
Earlier reports suggested that gunmen had stormed Ihekweme’s residence, forcing his driver to lure him out before whisking him away. These claims were further fueled by a video posted on Facebook by his wife, Excel Fabian. In the video, she accused the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, of orchestrating her husband’s detention and held him accountable for any harm that might come to him.
However, in a statement released on Thursday, the Imo State Police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, dismissed these allegations, stating that Ihekweme’s arrest followed due process and was based on a petition from a civil society organization, the Imo Democratic Alliance.
“The reports circulating on social media about his abduction by gunmen are false,” Okoye said. “Ihekweme was arrested by police detectives on 27 November in response to allegations of seditious and inflammatory publications aimed at inciting unrest in the state.”
Okoye further explained that the arrest was carried out in line with legal procedures, including obtaining a duly signed warrant. He assured the public that the police remain committed to upholding the rule of law without external interference.
“The Imo State Police Command urges Nigerians to disregard the misleading reports. We will continue to provide timely updates as necessary,” he added.
Ihekweme’s arrest has sparked controversy, with some linking it to political tensions in the state. While the police maintain that the action was a lawful response to civil unrest allegations, critics have raised concerns about potential political motives.
