Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has voiced strong opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills, pledging to mobilize northern lawmakers against their passage.
In an interview with BBC Hausa, Zulum expressed deep concerns about the negative impact the reforms could have on the northern region’s economy. He argued that the proposed legislation, if enacted, would exacerbate poverty, hunger, and economic hardship in the already vulnerable region.
“The implementation of these tax reforms will only deepen the economic challenges in the north, creating more poverty and hardship for our people,” Zulum stated.
The governor also criticized the rapid pace at which the bills are advancing in the National Assembly, suggesting that they disproportionately favor Lagos State, the president’s political base, at the expense of the northern states.
“While Lagos State may benefit significantly from these reforms, the north, which already struggles with economic vulnerabilities, will bear the brunt,” Zulum remarked.
Zulum reminded President Tinubu of the pivotal role northern voters played in his victory during the 2023 presidential election, cautioning him against dismissing the region’s concerns.
“He should not ignore our concerns or believe the rumors that the north does not support him. We want to ensure that the voices of our people are heard,” Zulum added.
The governor further raised concerns about potential behind-the-scenes lobbying that could influence lawmakers to back the reforms.
“We are worried that some lawmakers might be persuaded through backroom deals or even bribed to support these bills. This would be a disservice to the people they represent,” he said.
Zulum’s remarks come at a time when Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills have sparked widespread debate and resistance across various regions in the country. Critics argue that the reforms are skewed to benefit certain states while leaving others at a disadvantage.
Zulum’s call to action may escalate tensions between the northern bloc and the federal government, setting the stage for a significant showdown in the National Assembly. Northern lawmakers, under Zulum’s guidance, are expected to deliberate and present a unified stance against the proposed reforms in the coming weeks.
