BREAKING: Former FCT Minister Is Dead

Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni (rtd.), former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and a distinguished statesman, has passed away at the age of 81. His death occurred on Thursday, January 23, 2025, after a prolonged illness.

The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, confirmed the news through a statement released by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere. Governor Mutfwang described General Useni’s passing as a significant loss, not only to his family but also to Plateau State, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the nation as a whole.

In his tribute, the Governor praised Useni’s legacy of service and commitment, highlighting his profound impact on Nigeria’s security and political development. He noted that the late General’s efforts in promoting peace, especially in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State, would be remembered for generations.

A Distinguished Career in Service
Governor Mutfwang recounted Useni’s remarkable career, which included various high-profile roles. As a senior military officer, Useni served with distinction, holding positions such as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT. His tenure in these roles was marked by dedication and excellence, leaving an enduring legacy.

After retiring from the military, Useni transitioned to politics, where he continued his service to the nation. He played a pivotal role in the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) as its Deputy Chairman and later joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). In 2015, he was elected Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District, further contributing to the country’s development.
