A police constable identified as Dogara Akolo-Moses, who was attached to the Mada Station Division under the Nasarawa State Police Command, has reportedly taken his own life in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has left his colleagues and the entire command in deep shock, as the circumstances surrounding his actions remain unknown.
According to eyewitness accounts, Akolo-Moses had been seen carrying out his routine duties earlier in the day without showing any signs of distress. However, he later withdrew into a private room, where he allegedly shot himself.
A source, who spoke anonymously to Daily Trust, recounted the moment his colleagues responded to the sound of gunfire.
“Officers who were outside the apartment heard a gunshot and immediately rushed inside, only to find him lying lifeless on the floor with his service weapon beside him,” the source revealed.
At the time of this report, no clear motive had been established for his actions.
Confirming the incident to journalists in Lafia on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Nasarawa State Command, Ramhan Nansel, stated that an investigation is underway to determine the factors that led to the officer’s tragic decision.
“This is an unfortunate incident, and we are currently conducting a thorough investigation to understand what led to it,” Nansel said.
The development has raised concerns about the mental health and well-being of security personnel, sparking discussions on the need for psychological support within the force.
