Onitsha, Anambra State – A shop owner in Onitsha has reportedly fallen victim to an alleged act of vandalism by operatives of the Anambra State Sanitation Task Force, OCHA Brigade, after failing to pay a N100,000 fine for not cleaning the gutter in front of his shop.
Eyewitnesses claim that the task force, which was enforcing the state’s sanitation laws, arrived at the location and accused the trader of neglecting his environmental duties. When he pleaded for more time to address the issue, officials allegedly responded by forcibly pulling down shelves, destroying goods, and scattering his wares on the street.
“The fine was too much. He begged them, but they didn’t listen. Instead, they wrecked his shop,” an onlooker told reporters.
The incident has sparked outrage among local traders, who argue that while sanitation laws are necessary, the enforcement approach is becoming excessive and punitive. Many fear that such actions could further cripple small businesses struggling in an already difficult economic climate.
Efforts to reach officials from the OCHA Brigade for a response have been unsuccessful as of the time of reporting. However, concerned citizens and advocacy groups are calling on Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration to investigate the incident and ensure that enforcement measures do not lead to undue hardship for struggling traders.
