In a surprising turn of events ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primary in Anambra State, scheduled for tomorrow, another prominent aspirant has withdrawn from the race, signaling fresh turbulence within the party’s state chapter.
Paul Chukwuma, a notable contender from Umueri in Anambra North Senatorial District, announced his withdrawal from the primary on Friday. Alongside stepping down from the race, Chukwuma also tendered his resignation from the APC entirely, citing discontent with internal party issues and what he described as a hijack of the process by “unprogressive elements.”
Speaking to party faithful and associates, Chukwuma emphasized that his decision to exit was not a critique of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu or the federal administration. He reaffirmed his unwavering support for the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda, describing it as a transformative vision for Nigeria’s future.
“Mr. President is not the problem of the APC,” Chukwuma stated. “The real challenge lies with certain individuals within the party structure who are resistant to progress and reform.”
Chukwuma added that he had formally communicated his resignation to the APC ward chairman, noting that he would be taking time off politics after years of contributing to the party’s growth in Anambra State. “For now, I want to rest. I’ve given my best in building the party,” he said.
His withdrawal comes shortly after another aspirant, Chukwuma Umeoji from Aguata, also pulled out of the race. In his own statement, Umeoji expressed gratitude to his supporters for their loyalty and commitment, wishing the APC success in its primary and beyond.
Despite the exits, the contest for the party’s ticket remains fierce, with several high-profile aspirants still in the running. These include Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, Edozie Madu, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, Valentine Ozigbo, and Johnbosco Onunkwo—each vying for the chance to fly the APC flag in the upcoming 2025 Anambra governorship election.
Political observers are closely watching developments as party dynamics continue to shift just hours before the primary begins.
