Labour Party Suspends MP Dan Norris After Rape Arrest

The United Kingdom’s Labour Party has suspended Member of Parliament Dan Norris following his arrest in connection with serious criminal allegations, including sexual offences against a minor and rape.

Law enforcement authorities confirmed on Friday that a man in his 60s had been taken into custody on suspicion of multiple offences — including sexual crimes involving a young girl, child abduction, and misconduct in public office.

In a statement, police disclosed that the alleged incidents spanned different time periods. “Most of the offences are alleged to have taken place during the 2000s, but we are also investigating a reported case of rape that allegedly occurred in the 2020s,” the statement read.

On Saturday, the Labour Party confirmed that Dan Norris, MP for North East Somerset and Hanham, had been suspended immediately after the party was notified of his arrest.

“Dan Norris MP was immediately suspended by the Labour Party upon being informed of his arrest,” a party spokesperson said. “We are unable to comment further while the police investigation is underway.”

Norris, 65, returned to Parliament in 2024 after defeating Conservative heavyweight Jacob Rees-Mogg in the general election — a major win for Labour at the time. Prior to this, Norris had served as an MP in earlier years and was appointed a junior minister under Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s administration.

The developments have shocked both Parliament and the public, given Norris’s long-standing presence in British politics. As of now, investigations remain ongoing, and authorities have yet to confirm whether formal charges will be brought forward.

Legal experts note that if the investigation leads to prosecution, it could result in a by-election in Norris’s constituency, pending the outcome of the case.
