The Nigerian Presidency has reassured citizens that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains actively involved in the affairs of the nation, despite his current stay in Europe.
This assurance comes amidst growing public concern over the escalating insecurity across the country and calls for Tinubu’s immediate return.
Recently, former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, raised alarm over the worsening state of security, particularly in Northern Nigeria. In a statement released via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, Obi criticized the absence of visible leadership in the face of mounting violence.
Highlighting a disturbing trend, Obi stated that in the span of just two weeks, over 150 Nigerians have been killed in attacks, especially in Plateau and Zamfara States. He emphasized that the foremost responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property, questioning the rationale behind President Tinubu’s continued stay abroad.
“It’s troubling that while innocent lives are being lost daily, the President is reportedly attending a retreat in a foreign country—one that has long since secured peace for its citizens,” Obi remarked.
Responding to the criticisms, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, released a statement on Thursday, April 17, clarifying the situation. According to him, President Tinubu’s trip is temporary and aligns with the earlier-announced schedule of a two-week working visit.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains fully engaged in Nigeria’s governance even while abroad,” the statement read. “After leaving Paris, the President proceeded to London and has since been in constant communication with top government officials. He continues to issue directives on pressing national matters, including the security situation in various parts of the country.”
Onanuga further disclosed that Tinubu’s return to Abuja is expected shortly after the Easter holidays, and that the President has been particularly attentive to matters of national security, instructing service chiefs to respond swiftly to threats.
“The administration continues to function efficiently under President Tinubu’s leadership,” Onanuga noted. “We understand the concerns of Nigerians and want to assure everyone that governance is not on pause.”
The back-and-forth underscores growing public scrutiny of the government’s handling of internal security and leadership visibility. As the country grapples with rising violence and loss of lives, many citizens are hoping for not just reassurance, but visible action and leadership on the ground.
