The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that its operatives have secured the Vigilante Group’s office in Amesi, located in Aguata Local Government Area, following an attack by unidentified armed men.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the incident occurred late on Friday, April 25, 2025. He explained that a group of gunmen attempted to forcibly breach the vigilante office, but were met with strong resistance from the security personnel on duty. The confrontation led to an exchange of gunfire, during which four patrol vehicles and two motorcycles were unfortunately set ablaze by the attackers.
While some reports circulating online suggested that a casualty was recorded during the attack, SP Ikenga clarified that no lives were lost. He emphasized that the security operatives successfully defended the facility without any fatalities.
Following the incident, the police spokesperson assured the public that normalcy has returned to the area. He added that the Joint Security Task Force has ramped up its operations to track down and eliminate criminal elements operating within the locality. Residents were also urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.
The Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order, noting that the situation is being closely monitored. SP Ikenga promised that the police would continue to update the public as more information becomes available.
This recent attack adds to a series of assaults on security facilities across Anambra State. It will be recalled that in November 2024, unknown assailants ambushed members of the Anambra State Vigilante Group along the Amesi-Uga Road, also in Aguata LGA. That incident left one vigilante operative injured and resulted in the destruction of their operational vehicle.
Security experts have expressed concern over the recurring attacks on security outposts in the state, highlighting the urgent need for improved intelligence gathering and more proactive community policing strategies. Meanwhile, local authorities continue to appeal for cooperation from residents, stressing that collective efforts are crucial in combating criminal activities and ensuring the safety of lives and property.
