Pastor Funke Awolowo, granddaughter of the late Nigerian nationalist Chief Obafemi Awolowo, has formally resigned from her role in the Labour Party’s Lagos State Executive Committee, citing deep concerns over integrity and internal party practices.
Until her resignation, Awolowo served as the Head of the Mobilisation and Integration Team for the Lagos chapter of the party.

In a resignation letter addressed to the Lagos State Labour Party Chairperson, Dayo Ekong, Awolowo expressed disillusionment over what she described as troubling developments within the party.
“Recent developments have made it increasingly difficult for me to continue in this role in good conscience. I have observed with growing concern that the integrity of the committee is being compromised,” her statement read.
Awolowo said her personal values were at odds with the actions of some members of the executive, adding that her name had been unfairly linked to activities she neither condoned nor participated in.
A Legacy of Service Compromised
The respected pastor and political advocate lamented that the Labour Party’s Lagos leadership was veering away from its founding ideals and being used to serve private interests.
“For years, I have served with sincerity and dedication… However, when the purpose of service is blurred by personal interests and the space for integrity begins to shrink, it becomes necessary to step aside,” she stated.
Still Committed to National Progress
While distancing herself from the Lagos Labour Party leadership, Pastor Awolowo reaffirmed her commitment to national development and democratic ideals.
“I believe in the promise of a better Nigeria and will continue to work toward that end in whatever capacity I am able. I remain grateful for the opportunity to have served.”
Her resignation comes just four months after she publicly called for unity among Obidient Movement members, Afenifere, and other progressive coalitions advocating for a New Nigeria.
