In a major political realignment, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State witnessed a significant boost as prominent political figures from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Labour Party officially defected to its fold over the weekend.
Leading the high-profile defection was Engr. Ifunanya Attah, the APGA candidate for the 2023 Enugu State House of Assembly election representing Igbo-Etiti Constituency. He was joined by Hon. Frederick Odoh, a well-known Labour Party stalwart, along with several other key members of the Labour Party.
In a show of growing support for the APC, the ward executives of the Labour Party in 14 out of the 20 political wards in Igbo-Etiti also announced their resignation from the party and their full integration into the APC.
The defectors were formally received by the APC Chairman in Enugu State, Barr. Ugo Agballa, in a ceremony that drew political heavyweights and party faithful from across the state.
Among the dignitaries present were Chief Uche Nnaji, Hon. Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology; Hon. Sunday Umeha, Member of the House of Representatives (Ezeagu/Udi Federal Constituency); Hon. Dr. Dennis Oguerinwa Amadi, former MHR for Udi/Ezeagu; and Professor Nnanyelugo Ike Muonso, Director-General of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council. Several other APC chieftains graced the occasion, signaling the party’s strong and growing presence in Enugu politics.
In his address, Barr. Ugo Agballa hailed the defection as a turning point for the APC in Enugu State and emphasized the importance of building a robust opposition to end what he described as the prolonged dominance and underperformance of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
“We want competitive democracy in Enugu State because the PDP has taken the state backwards in terms of infrastructure and economic indices,” he said.
Echoing this sentiment, Chief Uche Nnaji declared, “We will make sure our people’s confidence is restored in leadership, and we will win Enugu State for APC in the next election.”
