Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has publicly addressed claims linking him politically to late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, clarifying that their interaction was strictly professional.
In a statement posted Wednesday on X, Obi said he was co-opted into a task force on port decongestion during Abacha’s regime and never met the late leader before that encounter.
“Our meeting with him was borne out of collective concern as traders and importers over the prolonged delays in clearing goods at the ports,” Obi explained.
“We approached him not as political actors, but as concerned citizens seeking pragmatic solutions.”
He clarified, “I had never met General Sani Abacha prior to that engagement. Our mission was straightforward — to advocate for greater efficiency and recommend practical solutions to restore order in port operations.
”To back up his statement, Obi presented a letter confirming his appointment to the task force, stating, “Attached is the letter that documents my inclusion, alongside others, in the Taskforce on Port Decongestion.”He stressed that his participation stemmed purely from a sense of civic responsibility, not political ambition.
“This clarification is made in the spirit of truth — to reaffirm that our actions were guided entirely by a commitment to public service.
”Responding to critics, Obi remarked, “I don’t expect this detailed evidence to silence the Abacha narrative completely, as those spreading it have hidden agendas.
However, I’m putting it out for the record — for posterity and in line with my pledge of transparency.”
