A UK court has ruled in favor of Nigerian-born energy trader and father of three, Ogunkanmi, after finding that a woman named Chia fabricated a decade-long rape allegation against him.
The court heard that Chia met Ogunkanmi during a one-night stand at Hilton Hotel, Paddington, in 2015. Despite being warned by police and even previously arrested, Chia ignored multiple restraining orders and continued to accuse Ogunkanmi on social media of drugging, raping, and impregnating her, molesting her child, and bribing authorities—all claims the court found to be entirely false.
According to Ogunkanmi’s testimony, he initially gave Chia £250 to help with what she claimed was a phone bill. However, she later demanded more money and, when he refused, began an online campaign aimed at tarnishing his reputation. “She tried to extort me. When I didn’t comply, she launched a social media campaign full of lies,” he stated in court documents.
Chia had also previously been convicted of assaulting a mutual friend who introduced her to Ogunkanmi. She was sentenced to 10 weeks in prison and handed a five-year restraining order.
In the ruling, Judge Susie Alegre awarded Ogunkanmi £25,000 in damages and issued a new injunction against Chia, condemning her posts as “malicious” and “completely false.” Although Ogunkanmi had initially sought £120,000 in damages, he expressed relief after the decision, emphasizing how damaging false accusations can be and urging social media companies to take quicker action against such abuses.
