Former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, has shared details of his interaction with Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, during a condolence visit to the late President Muhammadu Buhari’s residence in Daura, Katsina State.
According to Bashir, Obi arrived alongside other dignitaries to pay his respects, and their brief exchange was largely non-political. Ahmad stated that he went around greeting various attendees, including Atiku Abubakar, Nasir el-Rufai, and eventually Obi, who was seated beside Mamman Daura.
He recalled that Obi commended him for his unwavering loyalty to the late president, even after Buhari had left office. Bashir emphasized that there was no political conversation at first — not until much later, when Obi, in a casual tonye, encouraged him to support his future political ambition and commented on the vast agricultural potential he had observed in Daura.
Ahmad, however, expressed disappointment at the backlash he received online from some supporters of Peter Obi, known as “Obidients,” following the publication of their photo together. He said:> “I would like to even make it clear that I didn’t visit Peter Obi, he came to us and he did so out of respect for President Buhari… it was purely a humane, respectful moment during a time of mourning.
”Criticizing the conduct of some of Obi’s supporters, Ahmad remarked that their intolerance and hostility could hinder Obi’s ability to build the broad coalition required to win a presidential election.
He concluded by reaffirming that his own party understood the context of the meeting and did not politicize it.
