Pro-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, has revealed that half of the 4,000 hectares of land left to the institution by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, consists of mountainous terrain, rendering it largely unusable for development.
Speaking during an interview with Arise TV, Dr. Tejuoso lamented that the land reduction from 11,000 hectares to 4,000 by the FCT minister has severely limited the university’s expansion potential.“Even the 4,000 hectares 2,000 out of it is a mountain,” he said.
“When you fly out of the airport, the mountain you see is in the university. Looking at what has been proposed, we only have 2,000 hectares, because we have a mountain of 2,000.
Maybe Minister Wike should come and take over the mountain and develop it…”Tejuoso also disclosed that the Cancer Research Centre of Nigeria had shown interest in partnering with the university to establish a research facility, but the limited usable space was becoming a serious obstacle.
The university had previously enjoyed a vast land allocation of 11,000 hectares before Wike’s controversial decision to reduce it a move that has sparked debates over its impact on the institution’s long-term infrastructure and academic development.
