
A police sergeant, Aminu Yusuf, was shot and killed on Wednesday by suspected armed robbers while providing escort for a Chinese national in Benin City, Edo State.
The attack occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. along First East Circular Road, shortly after the escort team departed a Zenith Bank branch on Sapele Road. Yusuf, bearing Force Number 504545, was attached to Time Ceramic, a designated police post, and was assigned to secure the expatriate during a cash movement operation.
According to police sources, four armed men ambushed the escort vehicle and opened fire, fatally wounding the officer. The assailants fled the scene with his AK-47 rifle (Breech No. BD 347851), 30 rounds of ammunition, and ₦5 million in cash.
Sergeant Yusuf was rushed to the Specialist Hospital in Benin, where he was confirmed dead. His body has been deposited at God’s Care Mortuary.
The Edo State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the suspects and is working to recover the stolen weapon and money.
