The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially elected Barr. Donald Chidi Amamgbo as its senatorial candidate for the upcoming by-election in Anambra South Senatorial District scheduled for August 16, 2025.
Amamgbo emerged unopposed during the party’s primary held on Saturday, following the withdrawal of the other aspirants who had earlier expressed interest in contesting under the ADC platform. Their decision to step down paved the way for a consensus candidacy, reinforcing the party’s unity and strategic focus ahead of the crucial poll.
The primary was conducted through voice affirmation, following a motion moved by Hon. Ndukuba Chinedu, Chairman of Ihiala Local Government Area, and seconded by Chief Anene Chukwudi of Orumba South. The process was declared transparent and in line with the party’s constitution and electoral guidelines.
Speaking after the ratification of Amamgbo’s candidacy, the ADC State Chairman, Comrade Patrick Obianyo, described the process as a model of internal democracy. He expressed confidence that the party would secure victory at the polls.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of ADC, Chief Godson Okoye, commended Amamgbo’s emergence, describing him as “a lawyer of high repute, both nationally and internationally.” He emphasized the critical role of a senator as a national representative with focused attention on local constituencies.
“This is the first election our great party is contesting after the national coalition, and Nigerians are looking up to the ADC to provide a new future,” Okoye stated.
In his acceptance speech, Barr. Donald Chidi Amamgbo expressed gratitude to party delegates and leaders, pledging purposeful and inclusive representation.
“We shall storm Anambra South Senatorial District with a clear message of people-oriented service. Representation is about the people, and I assure you that Anambra South will benefit immensely from my time in the Senate,” Amamgbo declared.
He further stressed the importance of legislative tools in tackling the region’s pressing challenges:
“As a legislator, I will champion bills and motions that directly confront the issues of insecurity, unemployment, and corruption. These are not just national concerns, they are everyday realities for our people. We will push for increased federal presence in security architecture across the South East and demand strict implementation of job creation policies and anti-corruption frameworks.”
Amamgbo added, “There’s no excuse for the scale of youth unemployment and underdevelopment in our region. Through strong legislative advocacy, I will seek strategic intervention funds, youth empowerment laws, and oversight that holds agencies accountable.”
With the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) yet to produce a candidate amid internal disputes, ADC appears poised to consolidate its support base and make a strong showing in the August 16 by-election.
