Nigerian rapper CDQ has opened up about his decision to leave a stable banking job to fully chase his passion for music, a move that initially shocked those around him — especially music producer Masterkraft, who was his close ally and support system at the time.
According to CDQ, despite working in a bank, he often felt unfulfilled and found himself writing lyrics at his desk instead of focusing on his responsibilities.
“I quit my bank job. I couldn’t tell my mother or any family member then,” he recalled.
“I left the house and went to stay with Masterkraft in the studio. I told him banking isn’t my passion. I would probably only do it to make ends meet. But music is something that makes me happy, whether or not it pays off.”
CDQ revealed that Masterkraft, who not only housed him but even lent him clothes for work, was surprised when he chose to resign. However, CDQ was confident that their dedication to music would soon pay off.
He predicted they would achieve success within six months — a goal they surpassed.Their breakthrough came earlier than expected, securing a deal that allowed them to move from the ghetto to Lekki, a highbrow area in Lagos.
CDQ rose to national fame in 2016 with the release of his hit single “Indomie” featuring Masterkraft and Olamide. The remix, which also featured Davido, solidified his place in the Nigerian music industry.
