President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Yusuf Muhammad Yusuf as a Commissioner of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission (NLRC).In a related development, the Senate has confirmed Professor Dakas C.J. Dakas as Chairman of the Commission, alongside Dr. Uchenna Eugene Okolocha as Commissioner representing the South-South region.
According to Naija News, the confirmations followed the presentation and adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (Ondo Central), during plenary.
The appointments are in accordance with Section 2 (1) and (2) of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act, 2022, which authorizes the President to appoint a Chairman and three Commissioners, subject to Senate approval.The committee report noted that only two of the original three nominees—Professor Dakas and Dr. Okolocha—attended the screening held on June 25, 2025.
The third nominee, Professor Fatima Alkali from the North-East, declined her nomination and formally notified the Presidency of her decision.The committee confirmed that both nominees met all legal and professional criteria, showed competence, and had no pending petitions or security concerns.
To ensure regional and gender inclusivity, the panel recommended that a replacement nominee from the North-East—preferably a woman—be considered.
