The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has advised Nigerians to use their United States visas strictly in line with the purpose for which they were issued.
This warning comes in response to concerns raised by the U.S. government regarding the improper use of visas by some Nigerian nationals.
In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, the Service Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, emphasized the importance of complying with visa conditions to avoid serious consequences.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service wishes to notify the general public of concerns expressed by the United States Government over the misuse of U.S. visas by some Nigerians,” the statement read.
“All visa holders are urged to strictly follow the purpose stated in their visa applications.”Akinlabi noted that U.S. authorities carry out extensive security checks beyond the initial point of entry, and any violation of visa terms—such as overstaying or engaging in unauthorized activities—can lead to visa cancellation, deportation, or permanent travel bans.
He further advised Nigerian students in the U.S. to maintain active enrollment and avoid dropping out or missing classes without authorization, warning that such behavior could result in visa revocation and future travel restrictions.
Additionally, he cautioned against attempts to obtain tourist visas with the intent to give birth in the U.S., stating that consular officers are authorized to deny such applications.
“The NIS remains committed to working closely with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria is not subjected to broader visa restrictions,” Akinlabi said.
He concluded by urging all Nigerians to uphold U.S. immigration laws, stressing that compliance is key to preserving access to legitimate travel opportunities.
