Two police officers attached to the Majority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon. Kingsley Ikoro, were shot dead by unknown gunmen on Sunday, August 3, 2025, in Okigwe, Imo State, a zone notorious for violent ambushes.
According to Gist9ja, the attack occurred after one of the vehicles in Ikoro’s convoy broke down, forcing the two officers to remain behind while the rest of the team continued their journey.
The assailants struck during this moment of vulnerability, opening fire and killing the officers on the spot.
The Imo State Police Command spokesperson, Henry Okoye, confirmed the killing on Monday.
“There is no hiding place for those behind this heinous crime,” he said, assuring that a full-scale investigation is underway and that tactical teams have been deployed to comb surrounding areas for the attackers.
He added that the bodies of the fallen officers had been recovered and taken to the morgue.
The Okigwe region has become increasingly dangerous for both civilians and security personnel, with frequent reports of kidnappings, assassinations, and gun battles. Sunday’s attack is the latest in a string of violent ambushes that have raised alarm about worsening insecurity in southeast Nigeria.
