Fresh controversy has emerged over the recent promotions carried out under Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, which critics say overwhelmingly favored officers of Yoruba origin.
According to a SaharaReporters, out of 37 officers promoted under what has been described as “special consideration,” 30 were Yoruba, fueling allegations of regional bias and ethnic favoritism within the top hierarchy of the police.
The promotions have triggered growing anger and division among officers, with many claiming they were denied advancement despite meeting promotion requirements, allegedly due to their non-Yoruba background.
Senior police officers who spoke anonymously to Sahara Reporters warned that the development could undermine cohesion, fairness, and trust in future promotion exercises.
The police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi had on Monday confirmed that the newly elevated officers would be decorated at the Force Headquarters.
