FC Barcelona has reinstated goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen as first-team captain following the closure of a recent disciplinary case.
The club had previously stripped Ter Stegen of the captaincy after he announced his likely return to action on Instagram but failed to submit his post-surgery medical report to La Liga.
In a statement on Friday, Barcelona confirmed that the German international had signed the necessary authorization for the club to forward the report, effectively ending the dispute.
“The Club announces that the player Marc-André ter Stegen has signed the authorisation necessary for the Club to send La Liga the medical report relating to his surgery,” the statement read.
The club added that the disciplinary matter was now closed and Ter Stegen would resume his captaincy duties immediately.
The 32-year-old, who joined Barcelona from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014, has been a key leader both on and off the pitch. His return to the role is seen as a morale boost for Hansi Flick’s squad as they gear up for crucial La Liga and Champions League matches.
Ter Stegen is still recovering from surgery but is expected to be match-fit by the third month of the new season.
