Ebonyi NUJ Dismisses Claims of Threat to Press Freedom

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, has refuted claims that press freedom is under threat in the state following the suspension of Mr. Odoh Godfrey Chikwere, Acting General Manager of Legacy FM, Ebonyi’s first private radio station.

In a statement on Monday, the Council’s Chairman, Comrade Samson Nwafor, maintained that Governor Francis Nwifuru respects press independence and has never interfered with journalists’ constitutional duties. He stressed that no journalist has been harassed, attacked, or intimidated under the current administration.

According to Nwafor, Chikwere’s suspension was strictly an internal matter by his employer and not a government action. He warned against “clout-chasing individuals” spreading false narratives and urged media practitioners to uphold professional ethics.

The NUJ reaffirmed its cordial relationship with the state government and pledged continued commitment to safeguarding press freedom while promoting responsible journalism in Ebonyi State.
