
The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, community has been plunged into mourning following the alleged suicide of a Dentistry student, Ajibola Ibitayo, reportedly linked to poor academic performance.
According to a statement released on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, by the President of the Dentistry Students’ Association, Adebayo Idris, the tragic incident occurred shortly after the release of examination results on August 12.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our colleagues in the Faculty of Dentistry.
We have received the painful news that he took his own life shortly after the release of his examination result.
This loss is not just the departure of a promising young mind, but a painful reminder of the silent battles many students face,” the statement read.
The association extended its condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, and colleagues, while urging students to check in on one another and seek professional help when needed.
It further stressed that “mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should ever feel alone in their struggles.”
