The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commended two Alpha Jet pilots for their “exceptional courage and professionalism” after they safely ejected during an in-flight emergency on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the Nigerian Air Force Base in Kainji, Niger State.
According to a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the incident occurred shortly after take-off during a post-inspection functional check flight.
The aircraft unexpectedly developed a serious malfunction, prompting the pilots to act swiftly.
The NAF confirmed that the pilots expertly navigated the jet away from residential areas before ejecting, a move that the service described as a demonstration of discipline and sound judgement. Both pilots were rescued and are currently undergoing routine medical evaluations.
Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, praised the bravery of the pilots, emphasising that their actions prevented what could have been a major tragedy.
“Their bravery and professionalism prevented loss of life and reflect the high standards we expect of our personnel,” Aneke said. He also ordered the immediate formation of a Board of Inquiry to investigate the cause of the aircraft’s malfunction.
The NAF reassured Nigerians of its commitment to maintaining stringent safety protocols and safeguarding the welfare of its personnel.
“The NAF remains dedicated to safeguarding its personnel while protecting the lives and property of citizens in line with its constitutional mandate,” the statement added.
Investigations into the incident are currently underway.
