The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has confirmed the apprehension of 26 individuals in connection with the Yelwata massacre in Benue State.
During a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun disclosed that efforts are still underway to capture additional suspects linked to the killing of 47 people in Guma Local Government Area, Benue State.
He noted that although 28 individuals were initially arrested, two were subsequently cleared, as they had been used strategically to help.
Egbetokun gave assurances that the police are not overwhelmed by the current security challenges, noting that efforts are underway to recover illegal firearms and enhance border surveillance to curb irregular migration.
The IGP further disclosed that the suspects would soon be charged in court, alongside 22 others apprehended in Jos over the killing of nine travellers who were on their way to a wedding in Quanpan.
His statement follows a joint security operation in Benue on Sunday, which resulted in several arrests. However, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi, has yet to release the identities of those taken into custody.
This development comes shortly after President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Benue, during which he directed security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators and strengthen intelligence efforts to prevent future attacks.
