Anambra Refutes Ethnic Allegations in Ogboji Killings; Ebonyi State Urges Full Probe

The Anambra State government has expressed deep sorrow over the killing of innocent citizens during a recent attack in Ogboji, located in Orumba South Local Government Area.

According to reports, gunmen opened fire on a gathering in Ogboji on Monday, allegedly targeting individuals from Ebonyi State. The attack reportedly left about 13 people dead, with several others injured.

As of press time, no group has claimed responsibility for the brutal attack, and the motive remains unclear. In a statement released on Tuesday, Anambra State’s Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, condemned the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.

“We want to assure the good people of Anambra and beyond that this incident was not targeted at any particular state or ethnic group,” Mefor stated. “Preliminary investigations suggest that the unfortunate incident may have stemmed from an internal squabble.”

He added, “The government expects the police command to conduct a thorough investigation, identify the perpetrators of this heinous crime, and ensure they are brought to justice.”

The Anambra State government also reaffirmed its commitment to securing justice for the victims and ensuring peace across the state. “We urge all residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended. We will continue to work tirelessly to maintain peace and security in our great state,” Commissioner Mefor stated.

Meanwhile, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, through his Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor, has urged Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo to ensure a swift, thorough, and transparent investigation into the incident.

Describing the incident as a “senseless act of violence against law-abiding citizens,” Governor Nwifuru condemned the attack as not only barbaric but also a direct assault on peace, unity, and the sanctity of human life.

The governor revealed that he is already in communication with his Anambra counterpart, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, and vowed to ensure that justice is served. While awaiting the outcome of the ongoing investigation, Nwifuru urged the people of Ebonyi—particularly the affected families and communities—to remain calm and refrain from any retaliatory actions that could heighten tensions.
