A Nigerian man has shared a harrowing experience on social media, alleging that he was handcuffed and abducted by police officers who accused him of being a cultist.
In a series of TikTok posts, the man recounted that the incident took place around 8 p.m. as he was returning home from church.
He claimed he was stopped by officers along TV Road, opposite Baptist High School, and was ordered to turn off his car headlights and open the boot.
He explained that he complied with the officers’ instructions, but the situation quickly escalated when an officer inside a parked Sienna vehicle began yelling and accusing him of being a cultist.
“I had no idea some policemen were hiding in a dark corner with their Sienna van. They suddenly stopped me, shouted at me to switch off my car lights and open the boot — which I did,” he said.
“Right away, one of them seized my phone. The officer inside the Sienna started shouting, ‘Access that guy, identify that guy. That guy is a cultist.’ But I kept insisting I wasn’t a cultist.
”Although he presented his car documents, the officers reportedly demanded access to his phone in order to “identify” him.
He said that after refusing to unlock his phone, the officers forcefully handcuffed him and threw him into the back of their vehicle.
“I gave them my car documents, and after checking them, they said I could go. But one of them insisted, ‘You’re a cultist. Unlock your phone now. We must identify you.’ I told him he had no right to access my phone. That’s when they bundled me, slapped handcuffs on me, and shoved me into the back seat. They held me there for nearly an hour,” he recounted.
He further stated that he wasn’t allowed to make any phone calls and was accused of being on a secret mission in Benin based on what the officers claimed was “intelligence.
“I’m deeply traumatized. I honestly don’t know what to make of my experience with the Nigeria Police Force. Should I call them police—or kidnappers?” he said.
As the video made rounds online, concerned Nigerians took to the comment section to express outrage over the alleged abuse of power and offered words of sympathy and support to the man.
