The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 82.
The announcement was made in a statement released by Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, and endorsed by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
“In line with the seven-day national mourning declared by President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government has approved Tuesday, July 15, as a public holiday to honour the memory of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari,” the statement read.
Tunji-Ojo described Buhari as a leader who served Nigeria with honour, discipline, and dedication throughout his public life.He urged Nigerians to use the day to reflect on Buhari’s legacy, which included his commitment to national unity, democratic governance, and patriotism.
“This holiday is a time for all citizens to remember and reflect on the leadership and values upheld by President Buhari,” the minister added.He also encouraged the public to promote peace and national cohesion, in keeping with the vision the late president had for the country.
As part of the national mourning, flags will continue to fly at half-mast throughout the seven-day period, which began on Sunday.
The government extended its sympathies to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large, noting that the former president will be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura.
