Bello Muhammed Tahir Slams Muslim First Wives Over ‘Husband Snatcher’ Mentality

Nigerian Islamic cleric and counselor, Bello Muhammed Tahir (BMT), has strongly criticized the attitude of some Muslim first wives who label potential second wives as “husband snatchers.”

He described such a mindset as disgusting, un-Islamic, and unacceptable, urging for a shift in perspective rooted in religious understanding and emotional maturity. In a public statement, BMT expressed dismay that such sentiments persist, especially among Muslims, despite Islam’s clear stance on polygyny.

He questioned:

“From where did you get this unGodly conception? How does being the first wife make the man your property that any other woman can’t be interested in him?”

He noted that even many Christians no longer harbor such views, emphasizing the need for Muslim women to rise above jealousy and culturally influenced possessiveness that contradict Islamic teachings.

“It is sickening and very unpalatable how Muslim first wives think that a potential second wife is a husband snatcher… To say that this is coming from Muslims is dissatisfying. Even Christians don’t think this way anymore.”

BMT warned that such attitudes reflect poor spiritual conduct and could attract divine tests of character. He called on Muslim women to educate themselves on Islamic marriage principles and practice self-restraint and empathy.

“I hope Allāh doesn’t test you one day where the table turns and you have to be at the mercy of another… Some of us really need to be guided and learn how to conduct ourselves. Allahumma.”
