The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has issued a stern 48-hour ultimatum to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, demanding that he revoke the chieftaincy title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland recently bestowed on businessman Dotun Sanusi.
In a statement signed by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, Alaafin Owoade insisted that the Ooni lacks the authority to confer titles that extend across Yorubaland, stressing that such powers rest solely with the Alaafin.
The monarch described the Ooni’s action as a challenge to his authority, recalling that the Supreme Court had already affirmed the Alaafin’s exclusive right to bestow chieftaincy titles covering the entire Yorubaland.
He further explained that the Ooni’s traditional jurisdiction is limited to the former Oranmiyan Local Government, now split into Ife Central, Ife North, and Ife South.
“The Ooni of Ife is acting as though no authority exists to call him to order. His actions portray him as being above the law, even going as far as disregarding the Supreme Court ruling on this matter,” Alaafin Owoade declared.
He warned that if the title is not withdrawn within 48 hours, there would be consequences. The Alaafin also reaffirmed his commitment to peace and unity across Yorubaland, which he said remain vital for sustainable development in the region.
