Former Labour Party (LP) vice-presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has accused the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, of violating the Nigerian Constitution during the 2023 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Baba-Ahmed insisted that the election was rigged and blamed Yakubu for plunging the country into its current political state.
He stressed that Nigeria needs a credible individual to lead INEC ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning against retaining leadership that disregards constitutional provisions.
“A credible person, that’s all I want — not someone who will clearly read what the Constitution provides, 25 per cent in at least two-thirds of the states of the federation including the FCT, and still go ahead to breach it, putting Nigeria in what it is today,” he said.
Baba-Ahmed maintained that the 2023 results were inconsistent with constitutional requirements, reiterating his belief that the outcome of the election was manipulated.
