The Government of Botswana has dismissed a viral communique claiming that a public holiday was declared for Arsenal supporters following the club’s Premier League title victory.
The fake statement, which circulated widely on social media, was falsely attributed to Botswana’s President, Duma Boko.
According to the fabricated communique, the government allegedly approved Wednesday, May 20, as a public holiday to enable Arsenal fans celebrate the club’s English Premier League triumph after a 22-year wait.
The statement further claimed that the government recognised the loyalty, passion and unwavering support shown by Arsenal supporters over the years.
It also allegedly encouraged employers to allow workers participate in the celebrations in the spirit of unity and national excitement.
However, Botswana’s government has now officially debunked the report.
In a post shared on X, authorities clearly stated that the circulating communique was fake and did not originate from the government.
“No, there is no holiday for Arsenal fans,” the government stated while flagging the document as false.
The viral claim sparked widespread reactions online, especially among football fans across Africa, with many initially believing the announcement due to the popularity of Arsenal F.C. on the continent.
Arsenal were recently confirmed champions of the 2025/26 Premier League season, a victory that has generated massive celebrations among supporters worldwide.
