In a recent statement, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), firmly refuted allegations made by Biafra activist Simon Ekpa, who claimed that the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had reached an agreement to provide a $57.5 million loan to the government of a proposed Biafra Republic.
The assertions, which circulated widely across social media platforms, have raised significant concerns regarding the proliferation of misinformation relating to international financial institutions’ involvement in local political affairs.
Okonjo-Iweala emphasized that no discussions or agreements regarding such a loan have ever taken place. She categorically stated that she did not facilitate any loans pertaining to this matter and expressed her disappointment over the misinformation that has gained traction online. “It is crucial to clarify that no negotiations have occurred, and the claims are entirely unfounded,” she remarked.
