Anambra Government Approves ₦489 Million for Night-Landing Equipment at Chinua Achebe International Airport
The Anambra State government has approved a significant investment of ₦489 million for the installation of night-landing equipment at the Chinua Achebe International Airport in Umueri, located within the Anambra East Local Government Area. This decision is part of broader efforts to improve the airport’s infrastructure and increase its appeal to both airlines and passengers.
Dr. Law Mefor, the Commissioner for Information, confirmed the approval during the 34th Anambra State Executive Council meeting. He explained that the installation of Airfield Lighting is one of several key initiatives designed to enhance the operational capacity of the airport, making it capable of accommodating night-time flights. “This measure is part of a wider strategy to modernize the Chinua Achebe International Airport and ensure it meets the standards required for safe and efficient air travel,” Dr. Mefor stated.
The contract for the airfield lighting project was awarded to Mercy Aviation Communication Electronics and Industries Nig Ltd, valued at ₦489,716,250. The project is slated for completion within two weeks, and its successful implementation is expected to substantially improve the airport’s accessibility and operational hours, making it more convenient for airlines to schedule flights that arrive and depart after dark.
Additional Projects Approved
Beyond the airport enhancement, the Anambra State Executive Council approved a series of other projects aimed at bolstering the state’s infrastructure and fostering economic growth:
- Heritage and Tourism Master Plan
A contract was awarded to Red Clay Consulting for the development of a Heritage and Tourism Master Plan, at a cost of ₦125,807,290.63. This initiative seeks to position Anambra as a prime destination for heritage and cultural tourism, showcasing its rich history and vibrant cultural scene. - Reconstruction of COOU Teaching Hospital Gate
The council also approved ₦112,700,000 for the reconstruction of the gate to the College of Health Sciences at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU). The work will be completed within two months, improving access to the teaching hospital and enhancing its overall aesthetic appeal. - Property Clearing and Fencing at College of Nursing Sciences, Isuofia
A budget of ₦150,692,345.91 was allocated for property clearing and the installation of fencing at the College of Nursing Sciences in Isuofia. This project aims to improve security and facilitate better access to the institution. - Power Supply Enhancements for Anambra Mix-Use Industrial City
The government approved ₦1,742,706,051.91 for upgrades to the power supply infrastructure at the Anambra Mix-Use Industrial City. This project will enhance the region’s industrial capacity by ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply for businesses and investors. - Dedicated Injection Sub-Station at COOU College of Medicine
A sum of ₦1,240,500,000 was approved for the installation of a dedicated injection sub-station at the College of Medicine, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University. This development will provide the medical school with uninterrupted power, ensuring smooth operations for medical training and research activities. - Renovation of the Naval Base Complex at Iyiowa Odekpe, Ogbaru
The state also approved ₦76,244,438.35 for the renovation of the Naval Base Complex in Iyiowa Odekpe, Ogbaru. This renovation is part of ongoing efforts to upgrade the infrastructure of critical military facilities in the state. - Supply and Installation of UV-Resistant Chairs at Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka
The council approved ₦715,119,562.50 for the procurement and installation of UV-resistant chairs at the Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka. The project will enhance the public space, providing residents and visitors with durable and comfortable seating options. - Development of Anambra State Solution Data Platform
In a bid to improve governance and data management, the council allocated ₦97,087,625 for the development of the Anambra State Solution Data Platform. This platform is expected to streamline administrative processes and improve the efficiency of government services across the state.
Focus on Security Enhancement
In addition to the infrastructure projects, the Anambra State Executive Council also approved new security measures to strengthen the safety and security of residents. These measures include both kinetic (military-based) and non-kinetic (community and intelligence-based) strategies to address the growing need for security across the state. The goal is to provide a safer environment for all Anambra residents, fostering peace and stability that is conducive to economic growth and social development.
