Terrorists Attack Troops in Benue, Kill Three Soldiers

In a deadly confrontation in Kukawa Town, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, three Nigerian soldiers lost their lives during an attack launched by terrorists on troops under Operation Hadin Kai. The Nigerian Army confirmed the incident in a statement released on Wednesday, detailing that the attack occurred on Monday, November 25, 2024.

The attackers, described as a large group of terrorists armed with gun trucks and motorcycles, attempted to breach the military camp using a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) from the Gudumbali axis. Despite their aggressive tactics, the troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion mounted a formidable defense.

According to the Army’s statement, the soldiers’ response was swift and strategic, supported by the Air Component and the Nigerian Army’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Command. This combined effort delivered overwhelming firepower, forcing the attackers to retreat in disarray, leaving behind significant casualties and weaponry.

During the operation, 12 terrorists were neutralized, while several others escaped with gunshot wounds. The following items were recovered from the scene:

  • 5 AK-47 rifles
  • 1 RPG bomb
  • 1 RPG tube
  • 2 Anti-Aircraft (AA) guns
  • 1 QJC gun
  • 1 NSV heavy machine gun
  • 40 motorcycles
  • 152 rounds of Shilka ammunition

Additionally, the Army successfully neutralized four out of seven VBIEDs deployed by the attackers.

Regrettable Losses Amidst Victory

Despite the tactical success, the attack resulted in the loss of three gallant soldiers, who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending their nation. In response to the incident, house-to-house searches have commenced in Kukawa Town to ensure the safety of residents and eliminate any remaining threats.

Leadership Commends Troops’ Courage

Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, praised the troops for their bravery and unwavering commitment to duty. He urged them to maintain their momentum as they continue clearance operations and fighting patrols in the region.

Lt. Gen. Oluyede reassured Nigerians that Operation Hadin Kai remains resolute in its mission to eradicate terrorism in the North East. By doing so, the operation aims to create a secure environment where socio-economic activities can flourish, in alignment with the Army’s overarching mandate.

The Nigerian Army remains steadfast in its efforts to address security challenges in the region, ensuring peace and stability for affected communities.
