A Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, has delivered a significant judgment by upholding the suspension of Ali Odefa from his role as the National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The court’s decision was handed down on Friday, marking a decisive moment in the ongoing dispute between Odefa and the leadership of the PDP.
Odefa, who had held the position of National Vice Chairman for the South-East region of the PDP, was suspended from the party on October 4, 2024. The suspension was enacted by the executive committee of the PDP in his Oguduokwor Ward, located in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The party executives cited Odefa’s involvement in anti-party activities as the primary reason for his suspension, asserting that his actions were detrimental to the party’s interests and unity in the region.
However, Odefa strongly opposed the suspension, challenging its validity in court. He argued that the suspension was unlawful, claiming that the individuals responsible for his suspension were not legitimate and duly recognized ward executives of the PDP. He contended that the action taken against him was therefore null and void and should be reversed.
Despite Odefa’s legal objections, the Federal High Court ruled in favor of the PDP, affirming the suspension as lawful and valid. The court emphasized that the decision made by the executive committee of the party was in accordance with the party’s constitution and principles. In the judgment delivered in the case filed as suit no FHC/AI/CS/182/2024, between Herbert Ovuta and Odefa, Justice Hilary Oshomah ruled that the suspension of Odefa was legitimate and in line with the party’s internal processes.
Justice Oshomah further ordered that Odefa cease presenting himself as the National Vice Chairman of the PDP. The court’s ruling effectively strips him of any authority or recognition associated with that position within the party. The judgment has reinforced the party’s stance against actions that are deemed to undermine its cohesion and effectiveness in achieving its political objectives.
The ruling has significant implications for both Odefa’s political future and the PDP’s internal dynamics, as it reflects the party’s firm commitment to addressing allegations of disloyalty and maintaining discipline within its ranks.
