Unknown gunmen have launched a deadly attack on Umuchima village, located in the Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State, resulting in the tragic killing of a male indigene of the community.
The victim was accused of collaborating with the Nigerian Army and allegedly providing information about the presence of the gunmen in the area. This violent act follows the announcement earlier this week by the Nigerian Army that its troops, operating under the South East Operation Udo Ka, had successfully destroyed a gunmen’s camp in Umuchima.
The attack has caused widespread fear among the village’s residents, many of whom have fled their homes in a bid to escape further violence. The fear of becoming targets has driven them to seek refuge in nearby villages, where they hope to remain until the situation stabilizes. A few villagers managed to take only the most important belongings with them as they evacuated, reluctant to risk their lives by staying in the village. One of the fleeing residents expressed their fear, stating, “The fear is real. They just stormed the village in a commando-like style and killed a native whom they accused of being an informant.”
Reports earlier this week revealed that, just days before the fatal attack, members of the Nigerian Army’s 14 Brigade based in Ohafia had clashed with unidentified gunmen in Umuchima. The operation saw the arrival of more than 15 Hilux vehicles and armored personnel carriers at the village around 6 a.m., as troops sought to root out the gunmen who were suspected of operating in the region. These gunmen were reportedly camped near a river that marks the boundary between Abia State and Mbaise in Imo State.
The attacks in Abia State are part of a larger wave of violence sweeping across the region, in which armed groups have been engaging in violent confrontations with security forces, leading to a growing sense of insecurity in the area. The gunmen have been known for their brutal tactics, including ambushes, and their attacks have already claimed the lives of several security operatives.
In response to these incidents, the Abia State Government, alongside various security agencies, has vowed to intensify efforts to dismantle the criminal groups and restore order to the state. However, the violence continues to take its toll on local communities, leaving residents fearful for their safety and uncertain about the future.
