Minister of Information Warns Against Unfounded Criticism of President Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has urged Nigerians and political leaders to exercise caution and responsibility in their opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills. Idris reassured the public that President Tinubu remains committed to ensuring accountability in the proposed tax reforms, with the aim of benefiting the Nigerian populace.
Idris made these comments on Wednesday in Abuja amidst ongoing debates and discussions surrounding the tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly. He acknowledged and commended Nigerians for actively participating in the democratic process by voicing their opinions on the bills, calling this public engagement “the very essence and meaning of democracy.”
However, the minister cautioned that despite the diversity of opinions, it is crucial for all stakeholders to maintain a respectful tone in their critiques. He stressed that national conversations should avoid devolving into name-calling or the introduction of ethnic and regional slurs, which could undermine constructive dialogue. He also warned against the spread of misinformation and fake news about the tax reform bills and the broader fiscal agenda of the Tinubu administration.
Idris clarified that the tax reforms, far from impoverishing any state or region, are designed to bring relief to millions of hardworking Nigerians. He assured that the reforms would empower states and local governments, positioning them for sustainable growth and development. He emphasized that the fiscal reforms would not lead to the elimination or weakening of any federal agency, dispelling claims to the contrary.
Furthermore, the minister explained that the Tinubu administration’s fiscal reform agenda seeks to devolve more resources to states and local governments, with the goal of ultimately benefiting Nigerians at all levels. Idris reassured critics that the process is not being rushed and that the government is open to meaningful input that would address legitimate concerns regarding the bills.
In response to the ongoing scrutiny, President Tinubu has instructed the Federal Ministry of Justice and other relevant officials to collaborate closely with the National Assembly to resolve any ambiguities and ensure that all concerns are adequately addressed before the bills are passed. Idris expressed optimism that the reforms would enhance revenue generation without imposing additional burdens on the citizenry, ultimately fostering greater accountability in public resource management at all levels of government.
