The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old man, Sunday Echege, for allegedly attacking his wife, Chinonso Echege, and severing her wrist in a brutal act of domestic violence.
According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, the incident occurred on Sunday at Ibagwa-Agu Farm Settlement in Ibagwa-Ani, Nsukka Local Government Area. The suspect reportedly used a machete to attack his wife, allegedly acting on suspicions of infidelity.
Ndukwe confirmed that law-abiding members of the community assisted in apprehending the suspect, and the weapon used in the attack was recovered.
“The suspect has confessed to the crime, claiming he acted out of suspicion that his wife was engaged in extramarital affairs. He will be charged in court once investigations are completed,” Ndukwe stated.
Reacting to the incident, the Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, condemned the attack and assured the public that the government would ensure justice is served.
“This is yet another tragic case of gender-based violence, and we are fully committed to ensuring that justice prevails,” she said.
Enih revealed that the suspect initially aimed for his wife’s head, but she attempted to defend herself, resulting in severe injuries to both of her hands, including the complete severing of her left wrist.
Following the attack, the victim was rushed to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane, where she is currently receiving medical care.
The wife of the Enugu State Governor, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, has personally taken interest in the case, emphasizing that such acts of violence will not be tolerated.
“The suspect is being transferred to the Police Force CID in Enugu for a thorough investigation, after which the law will take its full course,” Enih affirmed.
The shocking incident has once again highlighted the urgent need to address domestic violence and gender-based violence in Nigeria. Authorities have urged residents to report similar cases and assured that justice will be served.
