The family of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has expressed dissatisfaction with the South East governors, accusing them of failing to take meaningful steps toward securing his release.
During a memorial event held on Friday in Umuahia to honor their late parents, HRM Eze Israel and Ugoeze Sally Kanu, Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, voiced frustration over what he described as the governors’ passive approach to the situation.
He argued that the governors had not shown a genuine commitment to facilitating his brother’s freedom, raising questions about their reluctance to act on conditions allegedly outlined by President Bola Tinubu for Kanu’s release.
“South East governors are not doing enough to ensure Mazi Nnamdi Kanu regains his freedom. Their silence and inaction suggest either complicity or some other underlying factor,” he stated.
Prince Emmanuel further urged the governors to engage directly with President Tinubu, emphasizing that their failure to seek an audience with him casts doubt on their sincerity.
“The crucial question remains: Why have they not met with Mr. President to discuss Nnamdi Kanu’s release? According to the information available to us, the President set certain conditions for them to fulfill, yet they have not taken any visible steps,” he asserted.
The memorial event drew the attendance of prominent Biafra elders and supporters, many of whom reaffirmed their demand for Kanu’s unconditional release. They emphasized the broader implications of his continued detention on the South East region and called for increased pressure on the authorities to address the matter.
