A Lagos-based National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ushie Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, has apologized for her viral remarks criticizing Lagos and the government, clarifying that her intention was to spark conversations about Nigeria’s economic struggles.
Taking to Instagram on Monday, Raye expressed regret over her choice of words, acknowledging that her comments may have offended Lagos residents.
“I want to first of all state that I am sorry to the people who were born and raised in Lagos State if you feel offended by what I said. I am sorry,” she wrote.
She explained that her remarks were part of a 30-day rant challenge aimed at drawing attention to pressing national issues. Her goal, she said, was to be heard and inspire discussions about Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions.
Raye also highlighted the financial struggles many young Nigerians face, noting that despite working over 45 hours a week, affording basic leisure activities remains a challenge.
“I work 45+ hours a week and I should be able to afford hanging out with my friends every weekend. However, I can’t. But how many of us can actually afford that?” she questioned.
Her video, which criticized the high cost of living and President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, quickly gained traction, sparking mixed reactions online. While some agreed with her sentiments, others condemned her for referring to Lagos as a “smelling state.”
Despite the backlash, Raye urged Nigerians to remain focused on demanding better living conditions rather than getting distracted by fleeting controversies.
“I encourage all of us to ask for what we believe we deserve. If we stay committed to asking for better, we will get better,” she added.
